Our Story

We opened The Green Room in April 2008 as two passionate cooks with big ideas but no previous experience of running a restaurant. We fell in love with the township of Laugharne after Jenni's mum Anne took over The Boathouse B&B the year before and instantly saw the potential of a small Cafe up for lease in the main square. With remarkable speed we found ourselves in the enviable position of holding the keys to our first business.

Starting as a cafe with a very basic menu our homemade pizzas soon proved to be a great success. We found ourselves making fresh dough twice a day and customers began to book tables in advance – something we had never dreamed of!

We started to make our own flavoured oils to complement the pizzas and, growing in confidence, we added a few bistro dishes to the menu each month. By autumn 2008, we had firmly established an identity for ourselves and our wonderfully supportive local customers were growing in number and began to return weekly, enhancing our buzzing and familiar atmosphere.

Sadly, by December 2009 our inexperience as restaurateurs had caught up with us, our rapid growth saw costs escalate which we were unable to maintain throughout the quieter winter months. We were, quite literally, victims of our own success and were forced to close the doors. Our journey appeared to be over.

This heartbreaking time allowed us to pause and catch our breath and as each week went by our determination to re-open grew stronger. Our mistakes became obvious, but our insatiable (and slightly unhealthy) desire to provide good food and a sociable and informal place to eat for the residents of Laugharne and it's visitors never went away.

With a re-launch planned for March 2010 we knew some tough decisions had to be made. A limited staff budget meant we could no longer provide cakes and coffees throughout the day so our opening times are now restricted to lunch and dinner service. Our beloved pizzas also had to go as they were becoming an expensive labour of love (but Jenni is still fighting to get them on the Specials board every now and then!).

Ultimately, we feel a responsibility to the wonderful residents of Laugharne who have welcomed us into the community and helped get us this far, so we hope our new menus and ideas will be as popular as ever. PS – We have kept our pizza dough recipe below, for those of you who want to have a go at making them at home. We will try to add new recipes and ideas every few months so keep checking back.
